I’ve received two offers from coworkers to buy their cars. One is an 2010 east coast Elantra Touring for $5k~. The other is my buddy’s 2001 M3 with 170k kilometres for $12k. One is definitely more tempting that the other. But it would permanently eliminate my bike buying plans if I bought an M3. Indecision sucks.

One is an 2010 east coast Elantra Touring for $5k
I’d sell you a practically brand new 2018 Forte for slightly more than that.

Does East Coast mean less rust? East Coast of Canada? That's quite a, um, TOUR babumcha!
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:34 |

Correct! Him and his wife are from Halifax and they brought it with them.
It would be the pot calling the kettle black since I'm from Toronto.

M3 all the way, better than the bike in my eyes.

It's all about having the money available, though.

I am not familiar with which areas of Canada use more road salt. I was thinking n ort heast US conditions of abysmal rust and terrible roads.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:38 |

I wouldn’t trust a single e46 M3 that costs less than 20K without a very thorough investigation into its condition. Frankl y, there isn’t a single E46 I would buy without a PPI.

Errr....I LIVE on the East coast and it’s never meant less rust as far as I am aware :(
If anything you want West Coast stuff because warmer climate and almost no snow in the winter for salty roads?
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:39 |
|
That would be a safe assumption for an easy coast car.

It was in an accident and was previously yellow, so I already know there's a potential for it to be a basket case.

Wait, was your car totalled?
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:41 |

“So you pay me 12k and I take your car? That's a deal."
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:41 |

Not yet (and if it is then fuck me sideways). My co-workers are just cognisant of my constant car shopping.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:43 |

You don't have to be so SALTY about it. It's just another BUMP IN THE ROAD, if you catch my (snow) drift.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:43 |
|
Wait how does that work? I thought it was colder in the East.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:48 |

Salt doesn't work below -15 Celsius so we tend to use sand more in Saskatchewan. Out east it's much warmer, but they get way more precipitation, and use more salt for the ice.

$12k (even Maple Leaf Bucks) for a 20 year old car with 170,000 km on it? crazy talk. especially a 20 year old BMW?
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:57 |
|
Not that crazy.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:58 |
|
You've been thinking about bikes?
![]() 05/29/2020 at 22:58 |
|
it’s crazy because the purchase price is not the end of the money you’ll spend on it.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 23:04 |

I’m hoping it’s American luck, but I’m kind of afraid of taking my new car anywhere now haha.
![]() 05/29/2020 at 23:04 |

Of course!
![]() 05/29/2020 at 23:05 |

Correct.

On the moto bias. I’d have a $12k new bike and $20k commuter over owning a sole $70k new sports car.
I wouldn’t even consider that 20yo M3 if life is not holding you back to get a moto. In 2 years I bet you could ride something with better performance
, more reliable and more fun than that car for less money all in
, especially if you do slightly
used or NOS bikes
.
I will say that I can understand you
if you stick with
cars g
ranted those
dumb boi keep jumping on the road.

What kind of bike?
![]() 05/30/2020 at 00:46 |

KTM Duke 390. Need my license first, which will happen after this pandemic wanes.

Terrible. :P
![]() 05/30/2020 at 07:23 |

Nope, a lot cooler in the Prairies! The jet-stream and closeness to the
Atlantic keep things warmer here. The absolute
coldest it gets here might be -25C, -30C plus windchill. Most of the time it’s more like -10C - -15C plus windchill (if any)
...it can get to like -40C in the P
raries if memory serves. (
M
aybe I am wrong, as I’ve never lived there!)
![]() 05/30/2020 at 07:24 |
|
Yup, plus salty air all the time from the ocean proximity, which is bad when it’s humid.
![]() 05/30/2020 at 10:44 |
|
-40 C sounds absolutely awful. I'd much rather take 100% humidity and 95 F. How do you even go outside?
![]() 05/30/2020 at 11:01 |
|
Oh, I don’t have to worry about it, but CB would! :P
![]() 05/31/2020 at 07:02 |

Any chance of using a bike for work out your way?
![]() 05/31/2020 at 12:59 |
|
0% chance of that happening.
![]() 05/31/2020 at 13:04 |

Too bad, looks like fun!
